When La Plaza opened in Palm Springs in 1938, it was touted as being unique among the shopping, entertainment and residence centers of the world. Acknowledged as one of the first master-planned shopping centers in Southern California, its Mediterranean/Spanish Revival architecture is still popular.
The historic Plaza Theater, located at the north edge of La Plaza, was home to the "Desert Insanities" as well as the radio shows of Jack Benny and Bing Crosby in the 1940s. In 1992, "The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies" opened in the theater. Today, La Plaza offers a diverse blend of shopping, dining and recreational opportunities along Palm Canyon Drive, Indian Canyon Drive and Arenas Road.
